The New CAVR Certification Process – The New Mark of Excellence!
In 2011, a CAVR Certification Task Force was created to develop a new certification process for our members. You shared your thoughts and comments, and we listened. CAVR is raising the bar and moving our profession forward with a new certification partnership with the
Council for Certification of Volunteer Administrators (CCVA). This is an incredible opportunity to earn an internationally recognized professional designation in Volunteer Administration.
CAVR will be working in partnership with CCVA to revisit their current professional competencies and in 2013. This important step will ensure that professional competencies for Volunteer Managers are in alignment with the new Canadian National Occupational Standards (NOS) that were released by the HR Council of the Non Profit Sector and CAVR in June 2012.
This is an exciting time for our profession and excellent opportunity to take the next steps in your career with increased confidence, knowledge and credibility.
Why Choose the New CAVR Certification Process?
The CVA Credential is open to individuals from any type of organization whether salaried or non-salaried, it is accessible and inclusive. The credential is competency-based and measures your knowledge and is based on your real-life experiences in the field. The core competencies and standards are developed by peers holding a CVA.
The CVA Credential is voluntary and International in focus with a long-term goal to expand globally in cultural and language adaptation. CAVR hopes to work toward developing a French version of the new CAVR certification process for AGRBQ, our French speaking affiliate group and other French speaking members across Canada.
What is the Difference between the New Certification Process and a Traditional Certificate?

The CVA Credential is not…
…a course on how to manage volunteers. It assumes you know the basics and have been working in the field of Volunteer Management and doing the work for at least three years. Although it is not required, the CVA Credential is a good next step after completing a “certificate” in Volunteer Management.
While you will definitely learn from the process, the emphasis is on assessing your current competencies rather than teaching you how to do the work. The credential is not a “certificate of completion”, it is a self-directed, independent process with no required classes. The credential is not affiliated with a particular college or university, it is owned by the field!
